Mountain lion confirmed in southern Illinois, IDNR says

CHICAGO — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has confirmed a mountain lion in southern Illinois following multiple sightings in Union and Jackson counties, officials said.

IDNR believes the sightings are of the same animal — the 12th mountain lion documented in Illinois since 2002, according to the department.

Mountain lions remain rare visitors to the state, which has no known breeding population. Previous confirmed animals have been 2- to 3-year-old males, and DNA analysis has suggested they dispersed from western populations, likely Nebraska and the Dakotas — meaning this animal may have traveled a great distance to reach southern Illinois.

IDNR advises anyone who encounters the animal to leave it alone and report the sighting to wildlife biologists. Sightings can be reported online, and guidance on mountain lion encounters is available through the state’s wildlife resources.
