Pastor Mike Jr.’s Nolan Wells Remarks Spark Questions Following BET Broadcast of Stellar Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Gospel artist Pastor Mike Jr.’s acceptance speech at the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards is drawing renewed attention online after remarks he made concerning the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells were reportedly not included in the version of the ceremony broadcast on BET.

Pastor Mike Jr. received the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award, an honor recognizing his accomplishments and influence in gospel music. The ceremony was taped at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 15 before receiving its national cable premiere on BET on August 30.

During his acceptance remarks, Pastor Mike Jr. used the moment to draw attention to Wells and his family’s continuing effort to obtain answers surrounding the teenager’s death. He dedicated his award to Wells and called for justice for the teenager and his parents, as well as a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Online discussion intensified after viewers alleged that the portion of Pastor Mike Jr.’s speech concerning Wells did not appear in BET’s televised presentation.

No public statement from BET or Stellar Awards organizers has been identified explaining the apparent difference between the remarks delivered during the ceremony and what appeared in the televised broadcast. It therefore remains unclear why the portion concerning Wells was not included.

Wells disappeared July 4 while visiting Horn Island off the Mississippi coast with friends. His body was discovered two days later. An independent autopsy commissioned by his family subsequently classified both his cause and manner of death as “undetermined pending investigation,” citing limitations that prevented a definitive determination.

Authorities initially said there was no indication of foul play, while Wells’ family and its attorneys have continued seeking additional information surrounding his final hours. The family’s legal team has pursued social-media, messaging and location records as part of its effort to determine what happened.

The case has since received national attention, with civil rights attorney Ben Crump representing Wells’ family and several prominent figures supporting calls for greater scrutiny surrounding his death.

Pastor Mike Jr.’s speech has now brought additional attention to the case and raised a separate question about the televised ceremony: Why were his remarks concerning Nolan Wells reportedly absent from the BET broadcast?

As of September 21, no public explanation from BET has established why that portion of the speech was not included.
