BELLE GLADE, Fla. — A growing number of advocates, community members, and LGBTQ+ organizations are calling for justice following the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jayla McGee, a Black transgender woman whose death has sparked conversations about media visibility, respectful reporting, and violence affecting transgender communities.
McGee was fatally shot in Belle Glade, Florida, on July 5. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shooting and found McGee deceased from gunshot wounds. The agency continues to investigate the homicide, and as of this report, no arrests have been announced and investigators have not publicly identified a motive.

Since her death, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have criticized what they describe as limited national media attention surrounding McGee’s case. Supporters have also expressed concern that some early official records and reports identified McGee using her former name and incorrect gender, arguing that such inaccuracies can make it more difficult to document violence against transgender people and preserve victims’ identities.
Friends and loved ones remember McGee as a vibrant young woman known for her bright smile, outgoing personality, and the positive impact she had on those around her. Tributes shared across social media describe her as someone who brought joy to family and friends and whose life was cut tragically short.
McGee’s death has renewed broader discussions about violence against transgender people in the United States, particularly Black transgender women, who advocacy organizations say continue to face disproportionately high rates of violence and discrimination. Community leaders are encouraging respectful reporting, greater public awareness, and continued attention to cases that may otherwise receive limited coverage.
While advocates continue to organize online tributes and call for justice, investigators are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers as the homicide investigation remains active.
Pulse Radio 96.1 will continue to follow developments in the case and provide updates as verified information becomes available.
