McGee was fatally shot in Belle Glade, Florida, on July 5. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shooting and found McGee deceased from gunshot wounds. The agency continues to investigate the homicide, and as of this report, no arrests have been announced and investigators have not publicly identified a motive.

Since her death, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have criticized what they describe as limited national media attention surrounding McGee’s case.
