Young Child Critically Injured After Being Struck by Vehicle in North Chicago

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. — A young child remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon in a residential area of North Chicago.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 20th Street and Honore Avenue around 3:30 p.m. following reports of a crash involving a child.

The child, who authorities said is younger than 13, was reportedly riding a bicycle and crossing the street when the collision occurred. North Chicago firefighters and paramedics arrived to find the child on the ground with life-threatening injuries.

Paramedics immediately began treatment before transporting the child to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, a Level I trauma center.

Because of the severity of the injuries, a medical helicopter was later called to Condell to transfer the child to a children’s hospital in Chicago for additional treatment. The child was reported to be in critical condition at the time of the transfer.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team was called to assist North Chicago police with the investigation. The intersection was temporarily closed while investigators examined the scene.

A bicycle could be seen lying near the sidewalk as investigators worked in the area.

Authorities have not released the child’s identity or additional details about the driver or circumstances leading up to the collision.

The crash remains under investigation.
