Investigation Underway After Waukegan Man Found Dead Inside Car at Libertyville Religious Center

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. — Authorities are investigating after a 36-year-old Waukegan man was found dead inside a vehicle at a religious center in Libertyville as people were arriving for Sunday Mass.

The Libertyville Fire Department and Libertyville Police Department responded around 10:10 a.m. Sunday to Marytown – The National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe, located at 1600 West Park Avenue, following a report of a cardiac arrest.

Firefighters were already at the Marytown campus investigating an activated fire alarm when the discovery was made.

Paramedics found the man deceased inside a vehicle parked on the property. The discovery occurred in the north parking lot behind the building while people were arriving for Mass.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and took custody of the man’s body.

Authorities identified the deceased as a 36-year-old man from Waukegan, though his name has not been publicly released.

An autopsy was performed Monday, but officials have not yet determined the cause or manner of his death.

Toxicology testing remains pending as part of the investigation, including testing for possible carbon monoxide exposure.

The coroner’s office believes the man may have been deceased inside the vehicle for more than 24 hours before he was discovered.

Marytown is a Catholic pilgrimage site and retreat center operated by the Conventual Franciscan Friars. The property includes a public chapel, friary, retreat and conference center and gift shop.

No additional circumstances surrounding the man’s death have been released.

The case remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
