President Donald Trump publicly addressed online claims that the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was staged, dismissing the accusations as false and calling conspiracy theorists “sick” and dishonest during an interview broadcast Sunday.
The comments came after a chaotic security incident Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where gunfire erupted near a screening checkpoint outside the ballroom while Trump and several top officials were attending the dinner. Secret Service agents quickly evacuated the president, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other attendees. Authorities say a suspect was taken into custody after allegedly opening fire near the entrance. One officer was struck in a ballistic vest and is expected to recover.
Within minutes of the incident, social media platforms were flooded with unsupported claims that the event had been orchestrated for political sympathy, media distraction, or to strengthen support for White House security upgrades. Multiple outlets reported the term “staged” trended heavily online despite no evidence supporting those allegations.
Trump, when asked directly about those theories, said he had not heard them before the interview and condemned the speculation. He also linked the rhetoric to previous conspiracy narratives surrounding past threats against him.
Federal officials say preliminary findings suggest the suspect may have intended to target Trump administration officials. Investigators are reviewing writings attributed to the suspect and have indicated more charges could follow.
The shooting has reignited debate over political violence, misinformation, and how rapidly false narratives spread online after major national incidents. While facts continue to emerge, no credible law enforcement source has supported claims that the attack was staged.
