Singer-songwriter D4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, will stand trial in the murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez after a Los Angeles judge ruled there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed.
The ruling follows a multi-day preliminary hearing during which prosecutors presented extensive evidence outlining what they allege was a calculated effort to kill the teenager and conceal the crime. Burke, 21, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Prosecutors allege that Burke fatally stabbed Celeste in April 2025 after she threatened to expose what they describe as an abusive sexual relationship that began when she was 13 years old. They contend he feared the allegations would destroy his rapidly rising music career.
Authorities further allege Burke purchased saws and other tools online before dismembering the teen’s body. Investigators say her remains were later discovered inside the front trunk of Burke’s abandoned Tesla after the vehicle was towed from a Hollywood Hills neighborhood in September 2025.
During the hearing, prosecutors introduced text messages that they say documented the deteriorating relationship between Burke and Celeste in the days leading up to her disappearance. Forensic evidence presented in court also included DNA analysis and testimony regarding bloodstains recovered from Burke’s home and garage that investigators believe are linked to the victim.
The case has drawn national attention because of both the disturbing allegations and Burke’s prominence in the music industry. Once considered one of the industry’s fastest-rising young artists, Burke now faces charges including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. Prosecutors have also alleged special circumstances—including killing a witness and acting for financial gain—that could make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
Burke’s defense team maintains that the prosecution has not proven he intentionally killed Celeste and argues the evidence does not establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The judge, however, concluded there was enough evidence to move the case forward to trial, where a jury will ultimately determine Burke’s guilt or innocence.
Members of Celeste Rivas Hernandez’s family expressed relief following the judge’s decision, saying they are hopeful the trial will bring accountability and justice for their daughter.
Burke is expected to return to court for arraignment before the trial begins in the coming months.
