Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a major shift in the future of PlayStation, confirming that it will end production of physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028.

The company said the decision reflects changing consumer habits, citing the continued growth of digital game purchases over physical media. After the transition takes effect, all newly released PlayStation titles—including both first-party and third-party games—will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers that sell digital download codes.

Sony emphasized that the change will not affect games released before January 2028. Existing physical editions will continue to be supported, and titles launching before the deadline will still be available on disc.

According to Sony, the move is intended to better align with how most players now choose to purchase and access their games while allowing the company to focus on expanding digital distribution and future innovations.

The announcement marks the end of an era for PlayStation, which has relied on physical media since the original console launched in 1994. While many gamers have embraced digital libraries for their convenience, others have expressed concerns over game preservation, ownership, resale, and the future of collecting physical editions.

With the transition set for January 2028, the next few years will represent the final chapter for new PlayStation games released on physical discs.
