CHICAGO — Health officials are monitoring cases of a parasitic gastrointestinal illness that has been reported in Illinois and several other states, with patients experiencing sudden, severe bouts of watery diarrhea often described as “explosive.”

The illness is caused by a microscopic intestinal parasite that infects the digestive tract. Symptoms can include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and dehydration. In some cases, symptoms may persist for days or even weeks if left untreated.

Illinois is among the states reporting cases, along with Michigan, New York, and Texas. While investigators continue working to identify the source of the infections, the parasite is commonly spread through contaminated food or water, poor hygiene, or contact with contaminated surfaces.

Health experts say anyone can become infected, though young children, older adults, travelers, and people with weakened immune systems may face a higher risk of serious illness or hospitalization.

Officials recommend washing hands frequently, thoroughly cleaning fruits and vegetables, drinking safe water, cooking food properly, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces to help reduce the risk of infection.

Anyone experiencing severe or persistent diarrhea, signs of dehydration, or worsening gastrointestinal symptoms is encouraged to seek medical attention as health authorities continue monitoring the situation.
