New projections tied to healthcare policy changes backed by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans suggest more than 17 million Americans could lose health insurance coverage over the next decade — a figure experts say would represent the largest drop in healthcare access in modern U.S. history.
According to analyses from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the coverage losses are tied to deep Medicaid reductions, stricter eligibility requirements, Affordable Care Act marketplace changes, and the expiration of enhanced ACA tax credits.
Healthcare researchers say Medicaid would absorb the biggest impact. Estimates show millions could lose coverage due to new work requirements, more frequent eligibility checks, and funding cuts affecting expansion states.
The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reported that when combined with separate ACA policy changes and expiring premium subsidies, the total number of uninsured Americans could surpass 17 million.
Policy experts warn the consequences could stretch far beyond insurance numbers. Analysts project increased medical debt, reduced preventative care access, overcrowded emergency rooms, and potential rural hospital closures — especially in low-income communities heavily dependent on Medicaid funding.
The debate over the cuts has become one of the most controversial policy battles of Trump’s current term, with supporters arguing the changes reduce federal spending while critics say the plan disproportionately harms working-class Americans, seniors, disabled individuals, and families already struggling with healthcare costs.
