As May continues, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are moving closer to the long-awaited opening of one of their most ambitious post-White House projects: the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side.

President Obama recently shared a new social media post highlighting the upcoming opening and offering a fresh look at the center as anticipation continues to grow. The update came shortly after the official opening date was announced, with tickets now becoming available ahead of the public launch.

The Obama Presidential Center, which has been in development since 2021, is being built in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side — a community deeply connected to the Obamas’ personal and political journey. The multi-purpose campus is designed to serve as both a cultural landmark and community space.

In addition to a museum focused on Barack Obama’s presidency and life story, the center will feature a branch of the Chicago Public Library with reading rooms, a community center, athletic spaces, gardens, playgrounds, and other public amenities intended to serve residents and visitors alike.

On X, Obama shared photos from the nearly completed campus while reminding supporters that the center will officially open to the public on June 19.

“Michelle and I can’t wait for you to visit the Obama Presidential Center!” Obama wrote. “Starting on June 19, the Center will be open to the public, and you’ll be able to check out the Museum along with public spaces like a new branch of the Chicago Public Library with a reading room, a two-acre playground, a fruit and vegetable garden, and more.”

Illinois residents will reportedly receive free access to many of the center’s amenities with valid state identification.

Public reaction online has been largely positive, with many supporters praising the project’s emphasis on education, community engagement, family spaces, and public access. Social media users described the center as “inspiring,” “beautiful,” and a meaningful addition to Chicago’s cultural landscape.

While the project has faced criticism from some political opponents and local advocacy groups throughout its development, excitement surrounding the opening continues to build as the summer launch approaches.

Once the Obama Presidential Center officially opens later this year, it is expected to become one of Chicago’s most significant cultural and historical destinations.
