President Donald Trump is warning Virginia voters that approving the state’s controversial redistricting amendment could have major national consequences, arguing it may help Democrats gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The referendum, set for Tuesday, asks Virginians whether lawmakers should be temporarily allowed to redraw congressional districts before the 2030 census in response to similar mid-decade redistricting moves made in other states. Supporters say the measure is meant to restore fairness after Republican-led states changed maps to gain political advantage. Opponents argue it opens the door to partisan gerrymandering.

Trump and Republican allies have framed the vote as a direct threat to their narrow House majority. According to Reuters, analysts believe a “yes” vote could create up to four additional Democratic-friendly seats in Virginia — enough to potentially flip control of the chamber and limit Trump’s federal agenda.

The race has become one of the most expensive ballot fights in Virginia history, with tens of millions of dollars pouring in from national political groups on both sides.

With national power hanging in the balance, Virginia’s special election is being watched closely across the country.
