A widespread freeze warning has been issued across much of Illinois overnight into Monday morning, bringing concerns over icy road conditions, isolated snow showers and the possibility of school delays or closures for April 20.

According to the National Weather Service, overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the 27 to 30 degree range across portions of central, northern and northeastern Illinois. Impacted areas include Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Springfield, Rockford, Aurora, Naperville and the Chicago suburban region.

The warning is expected to remain in effect from around midnight until as late as 9 a.m. in northern Illinois, while central Illinois areas could see freezing temperatures between approximately 1 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Forecasters warn that leftover moisture from recent rainfall may freeze on roads overnight, especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated surfaces. This could create dangerous travel conditions for drivers during the Monday morning commute.

Some areas may also experience isolated flurries or light snow showers overnight into early Monday. While no significant accumulation is expected, even brief snowfall may lower visibility and add to slick patches on roadways.

Because of the hazardous conditions, some school districts — particularly in suburban and rural communities — may consider delayed starts or closures Monday morning.

Residents are encouraged to protect sensitive plants, cover exposed outdoor pipes and use caution while traveling early Monday. Motorists should allow extra time and stay alert for black ice.
