A Houston police officer has been relieved of duty after a viral video allegedly showed her making racist remarks targeting Black people, prompting widespread backlash and renewed concerns about trust in law enforcement.

According to multiple Houston media outlets, Officer Ashley Gonzalez was removed from active duty pending an internal investigation by the Houston Police Department. Officials said the department is reviewing a video circulating online that appears to show the officer using racial slurs and making derogatory comments about Black residents.

The department has not publicly confirmed all details contained in the video, but local reports state Gonzalez was ordered to surrender her badge and service weapon while the investigation remains ongoing. She reportedly remains employed during the disciplinary process and could face indefinite suspension depending on the outcome.

The Houston Police Officers’ Union also condemned the alleged remarks, calling the footage offensive and racist. Union leadership said such behavior is not tolerated and emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence in the department.

Community leaders and civil rights advocates in Houston have called for swift accountability, arguing that racially biased conduct from any officer undermines public safety and damages already fragile relationships between police and communities of color.

The controversy comes as many cities nationwide continue grappling with demands for greater police transparency, stronger screening standards, and accountability when misconduct allegations surface.

As of Thursday, Houston police had not announced when the internal investigation would be completed.
