The highly anticipated collaboration between Popeyes and One Piece has already sparked controversy, as scalpers rush to capitalize on demand—listing the limited-edition bento box for thousands of dollars online.

The collaboration meal, which officially launched on April 13, quickly gained attention for its exclusive Luffy-themed bento box packaging. However, within hours of release, resale listings began appearing across online marketplaces, with some sellers pricing the collectible as high as $5,000.

Screenshots circulating online show multiple listings labeled “extremely rare” or “limited edition,” with sellers attempting to justify the inflated prices despite the item’s recent release. While some listings appear closer to the $800 range, the $5,000 price point has drawn the most backlash from fans.

The surge in resale activity reflects a growing trend in fast-food collaborations, where limited-time merchandise tied to major franchises becomes a target for scalpers. With Monkey D. Luffy as the face of the promotion, demand has been especially high among anime collectors and fans of the long-running series.

Many fans have taken to social media to express frustration, calling out resellers for exploiting the hype and making the item inaccessible to everyday customers. Others, however, note that such markups are common in collectible culture, particularly when supply is limited and demand surges immediately after launch.

As of now, neither Popeyes nor the creators of One Piece have commented on the resale situation. It remains unclear whether additional stock or restocks of the bento box will be made available.

For now, fans hoping to get their hands on the collectible may need to act quickly—or risk paying a steep premium on the resale market.
