The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells says it is ready to move forward with a forensic examination of his cellphone as questions continue to surround his mysterious death following a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi.

Wells, a student-athlete and rising sophomore at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled by boat to the island with friends on July 4 but did not return with the group. He was reported missing later that night, and his body was discovered near the island on July 6.

More than a month later, his official cause of death has not been released, and his family continues to challenge early suggestions from authorities that Wells may have drowned and that foul play was not suspected.

Now, attention is increasingly focused on Wells’ cellphone, which was not with him when he disappeared.

The family later recovered the phone from a friend on the mainland. Wells’ parents have questioned why their son would have remained on the island without either his phone or his keys. They have also raised concerns about what they say is a lack of content on the device from July 4.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the family, previously questioned the circumstances surrounding the phone.

“What teenager would leave their phone behind if they’re going to stay on this island? What teenager wouldn’t take their phone?”

Attorneys for the Wells family say they have been prepared to cooperate with authorities on a forensic examination of the device. Attorney Ahmad Smith said the family previously discussed conducting the examination through the Digital Forensics Lab at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, with the possibility of FBI involvement.

“Our position has not changed. We are prepared to coordinate a mutually agreeable date and procedure for the examination of the phone.”

Smith also pushed back against suggestions that the family has refused to cooperate with investigators.

“We want to make clear that this is not the case.”

According to family attorney Liza Park, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office has since requested that the family turn the phone over directly to law enforcement. The family maintains that this differs from what was discussed during a July meeting, when they say the parties agreed to pursue a joint forensic review involving both government investigators and outside experts.

The cellphone could prove important in reconstructing Wells’ final hours, including his communications, movements and activity before he disappeared. The family’s legal team has also sought information from social media and technology companies as part of its independent effort to determine what happened.

Crump and his team are conducting a parallel investigation into Wells’ death. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family found no fractures or significant deep-tissue injuries, but forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell was unable to determine a cause or manner of death based on the information available to him. The examination also noted red discoloration on the back of Wells’ skull that Mitchell said warranted further investigation.

Meanwhile, calls for federal scrutiny are growing.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have asked the U.S. Department of Justice to determine whether an independent federal investigation is warranted. Rep. Lucy McBath joined Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, and their attorneys during an August 13 news conference in Atlanta.

“This family stands here demanding answers. The family deserves answers.”

McBath said lawmakers want investigators to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death.

“We want to make sure that every stone is unturned because his life matters. We must stand up and we must demand accountability for this family’s loss.”

The caucus has contacted Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel and requested information about what federal authorities have done—or plan to do—in response to the case.

For Wells’ mother, however, the growing national attention comes down to one unanswered question: what happened to her son?

“Only thing we want to know is what happened. That’s all we want to know is what happened to our son.”

Wonsley said the approaching date of what would have been Nolan’s 19th birthday on August 19 has made the loss increasingly difficult.

“Many parents out there, you still have your children. You still can hug them. You still can call them. You still can celebrate their life with them, and we do not have that anymore.”

Wells’ family is planning a prayer rally in Mississippi and has called for a national day of prayer in his honor.

As the investigation continues, the still-unexamined cellphone remains one of the most closely watched pieces of potential evidence in the case. Wells’ family says it is ready for the examination to happen—they simply want the process conducted jointly, transparently and in a way that could finally help answer the question they have been asking since July 4:

What happened to Nolan Wells?
