Spain’s historic FIFA World Cup celebration has become the center of an unexpected political conversation after official images shared by both Spain’s national team and FIFA did not prominently feature U.S. President Donald Trump, despite his presence on stage during the trophy presentation.

Following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium, Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino in presenting medals and the World Cup trophy. However, after the trophy was handed over, Trump remained on stage as Spain prepared for its iconic trophy lift, prompting an awkward moment as Infantino appeared to encourage him to move aside.

During Australia’s SBS broadcast, an off-air remark picked up by a hot microphone gained widespread attention after a commentator was heard saying, “they can edit him out of that.” The comment quickly spread across social media as viewers debated Trump’s continued presence during Spain’s celebration.

When Spain’s official national team accounts later published their championship photos and videos, Trump was absent from the featured celebration images. FIFA also shared a tightly framed celebration photo that focused almost exclusively on Spain’s players, leaving Trump out of the main composition.

However, whether Trump was actually digitally removed remains disputed. Multiple outlets analyzing broadcast footage concluded that Spain likely selected or cropped images captured after Trump had stepped far enough away from the players rather than using photo-editing software to erase him. Fact-check organizations reviewing the footage reached the same conclusion, stating there is no evidence that Trump was digitally edited out of the official images.

The moment nevertheless fueled widespread online discussion, with critics arguing the official photos intentionally refocused attention on Spain’s players instead of political figures. Supporters countered that championship photographs traditionally center on the winning team regardless of who participated in the trophy presentation.

The incident added to an already eventful day for Trump, whose appearance at the final drew audible boos from portions of the crowd and generated significant media coverage surrounding his extended stay on stage during Spain’s championship celebration
