GURNEE, Ill. — Shoppers in Gurnee will soon lose another major grocery option as the Mariano’s store at 6655 Grand Avenue is set to permanently close after serving the community for 12 years.

The closure, scheduled for July 17, was confirmed by Roundy’s and Mariano’s officials, subsidiaries of The Kroger Company. Company leaders described the decision as a difficult one, saying it is part of a broader effort to strengthen the company’s long-term financial health.

“This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business,” a company spokesperson said.

The Gurnee location opened in July 2014, replacing a former Dominick’s supermarket at Grand Hunt Center. At the time, the store brought approximately 500 jobs to the community and became one of the area’s primary grocery destinations.

Kroger said all employees affected by the closure will be offered opportunities to transfer to other company-operated stores.

The Gurnee store is the latest in a series of Mariano’s closures across the Chicago suburbs. Stores in Buffalo Grove, Bloomingdale, Glenview and Northfield have also closed as Kroger moves forward with a nationwide restructuring plan. The company has announced plans to close about 60 stores across the country by the end of 2026 while reinvesting savings into improving the customer experience at its remaining locations.

The announcement has disappointed many local residents, who will now have fewer grocery shopping options in Gurnee. The closure also marks the end of Mariano’s 12-year presence in the village, leaving another large retail space vacant along the Grand Avenue corridor.
