The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified a 31-year-old Mundelein man who died after his SUV crashed into a brick entrance sign early Sunday morning, causing significant damage.

According to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek, an autopsy conducted Monday determined that Lukas Beelow, 31, of Mundelein, died from blunt force injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash.

The Mundelein Police Department and Mundelein Fire Department responded at approximately 1:50 a.m. Sunday to the area of Chevy Chase Road and Hawley Street following reports of a serious crash involving entrapment.

Upon arrival, emergency crews located a heavily damaged vehicle that had left the roadway.

Mundelein Police Chief Jason Seeley said the incident involved a single vehicle, a black Chevrolet SUV, which struck the brick entrance sign for the Grand Dominion by Del Webb community.

Investigators determined the SUV had traveled off the roadway north of Hawley Street before colliding with the structure.

The driver, later identified as Beelow, was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. No other occupants were believed to have been in the SUV at the time of the crash.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and took custody of the deceased for examination.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was activated to assist with the investigation.

According to police, a nearby resident reported hearing the crash and called 911.

The roadway remained closed for approximately four hours Sunday morning while investigators processed the scene and crews removed the damaged vehicle. The road was reopened following completion of the initial investigation.

Authorities have not yet released information regarding possible contributing factors in the crash.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Mundelein Police Department.
