A Waukegan woman has been identified after a deadly crash on Interstate 94 near Gurnee that authorities say may have involved intoxicated driving and cellphone use.

According to Illinois State Police and WSRL Pulse Radio 96.1, the crash happened around 5:07 a.m. Saturday on westbound I-94 between Route 120 and O’Plaine Road near Gurnee.

Authorities say a Mazda driven by 29-year-old Priscilla M. Martinez of Gurnee struck the rear of a semi-truck while traveling in the right lane of the interstate. Investigators allege Martinez was traveling between 70 and 80 mph before the impact.

The passenger, identified as 35-year-old Maria Conchita Perez of Waukegan, suffered critical injuries and later died at the hospital.

Lake County prosecutors reportedly said Martinez referenced looking at her phone when the crash occurred. She has since been charged with aggravated DUI involving death.

Multiple emergency crews, including the Gurnee Fire Department, Libertyville Fire Department, and Illinois State Police, responded to the scene. Westbound lanes remained shut down for several hours during the investigation before reopening around 10:45 a.m.

Family members described Perez as a loving mother whose presence deeply impacted those around her. In a statement shared by relatives, Rosa Perez said:

“She had a kind heart, an outgoing spirit, and a way of making everyone around her feel loved and welcomed.”

Court proceedings also revealed Martinez allegedly had a prior history of reckless driving offenses, including speeding violations.

The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
