NORTH CHICAGO, IL — A first-of-its-kind elementary school is set to open in the Chicago area, marking a major investment in families living at Naval Station Great Lakes.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday for the new Forrestal Elementary School, a facility designed not only for military families, but for the broader community as well.

The $72 million school, funded through a Department of Defense grant, will serve more than 600 students in grades K–5. Designed with a unique storybook-inspired concept, the building aims to create a safe, immersive, and welcoming environment for students and their families.

“It’s a new era for families living at Naval Station Great Lakes,” said Brad Schneider. “If you’re planning for a lifetime, build a school.”

Architect Josh Bergman explained that each space within the school was intentionally designed to spark imagination while supporting student well-being. From a cafeteria styled like an open meadow to a gym inspired by the Great Lakes, the environment blends creativity with functionality.

Students are already feeling the impact. Eight-year-old Eliana Castro said the design encourages curiosity and exploration, while also supporting students who may be more reserved.

Each classroom includes a dedicated sensory space—quiet, restorative areas designed to support emotional regulation. This feature is especially meaningful for military families, who often face frequent relocations and transitions.

“Even as an adult, change can bring anxiety,” said Eliana’s mother, Jasmin Castro. “For children who have to switch schools often, having a space like this makes a real difference.”

The new facility replaces an aging building constructed in the 1950s, which had significant infrastructure challenges, including outdated plumbing.

“For our families, this is about stability and comfort,” said District 187 Superintendent John Price. “It’s a home away from home.”

Community members say the school also serves as a meaningful gesture of appreciation for military families.

“Only about one percent of the population serves in the military,” Castro added. “To have something like this for our children—it’s not something we take for granted.”

Forrestal Elementary School is scheduled to officially open its doors to students in mid-August.
